My Project

The microscope is one of the most traditional tools of biology, and many of the ones in my classroom are older than my students' parents...since I've had a number of their parents as former students! Inspired by the Biosphere II project in Arizona, my Biology classes always terraqua biospheres during ecology [mini closed ecosystems with an aquatic section and a terrestrial part]. Later, when learning about cells and using microscopes, students have the opportunity to open their biospheres and go hunting for microorganisms. It's a challenge to use their hands to move the slide when a critter is swimming quickly. Human Physiology students examine prepared slides of tissues and organs. While nothing is moving, the ability to position the slide so that the pointer is pointing to a specific structure can be crucial. Mechanical stages move slides more smoothly and accurately. Having a camera attached to the microscope should make it easier to photograph than trying to use their phones over the microscope. Also, not everyone has a phone to use, so having a few cameras provides some equity to technology.

For my Health Academy students, microscopy develops observational skills, attention to details, and awareness of careers such as medical technologists, cytotechnicians, microbiologists, pathologists, and others in the Diagnostic Services Program of Study.

While the cost of this project is large, I'm asking for one mechanical stage microscope for each lab table, and a three cameras so that at least every other table can have one attached to a microscope.
