Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It's sad to see students that are lost or confused because I don't have a clear way to show them how to complete a problem or graph something because they can't follow me (especially my English language learners). A document camera would give me a tool to change those "I don't know"s into "aha!"

I teach algebra and geometry to students stuck in a socioeconomically challenged community in California.

I have a high concentration of English Language Learners and low income students. The ELLs are especially difficult to reach- most students in my first period class barely understand a word I say- but with the document camera hopefully they can at least follow my instruction visually. Our school is really lacking in technology. I am a new teacher here, and when I arrived I was given an 11 year old desktop computer and that was it.

My Project

I have tried using the whiteboard, but with 5 crowded classes (most around 30 students) it is impossible for everyone to see what I am doing. Guided practice is my opportunity to slowly give students the responsibility of doing the work themselves. I will use the document camera to show students how they can be taking Cornell notes, answering short answer questions, model drawing diagrams while they can do as well, practicing simple math basics, systems of equations, proofs, and a thousand other ways that I can literally model for them the correct way to do something so that they are never lost in class. This is especially important for my very low level English language learners in math who don't even understand many of my directions- the document camera will actually let me SHOW them where I want them to be.

My students are right on the edge, and I think this can really push them over those last obstacles preventing learning.

They will be more confident learners as they follow me as I model it for them. I can't wait to see their faces as they learn and can no longer use "I don't know" or "where are we" as an excuse!
