My students are freshman entering their first year of high school here in California. Our school is one of three public high schools in our district. At one point or another all three of these schools have been threatened with the possibility of closure. Fortunately for us, our contract has been renewed for the next two years. Unfortunately for us, the threat of closure has prevented teachers, parents, and administrators from investing any money into our classrooms. My students have come into my classroom expecting a new and refreshing start in high school. These kids are so excited to even make it to high school that they don't mind the shared calculators or broken protractors. They don't even mind the fact that the posters I have collected are scattered about the room in my feeble attempt to compensate for our lack of windows. But I know that these students deserve better. They are eager to learn and deserve every opportunity to do so.
