The school I teach in is a spectacular school. It is located in a great neighborhood and we also pull a large amount of our students from other neighborhoods and districts. The reason for this is we have an awesome team of teachers, administrators, and support staff. Some of the teachers working with these kids have been at the school for decades. Because we have such a wonderful and happy staff, the students have a great time learning. And when kids enjoy learning they do it very well! As a result our test schools are some of the highest in the district!
This year we are really focusing on skills that will take our students to the next level.
Instead of just teaching to test, we are challenging our students to be creative, cooperative, and to think big picture. We are encouraging projects that span many different skills, to push our students to be critical thinkers. We don't just want our students to excel in reading and math, but also music and the arts. We want them to become the well rounded individuals we need in our ever increasingly global society.
My Project
This year at our school we are focusing on project-based learning. We believe this challenges our bright students to develop and refine valuable skills like long term planning, teamwork, and critical thinking. Some of our projects are focused in the classroom and some of them are also music oriented!
Every year our school puts on several musical performances that draw hundreds of people.
Family, friends, and neighbors pack into a cafeteria that frankly, can barely hold so many people! But, they come to see a great show that the students have worked very hard on for many weeks. Also, one of our music teachers is a talented composer, so we often get to premier original works!
Currently, the camera we have been using to record the musicals is my own personal camera and it's going on ten years old. The battery is no longer holding a charge, making it impossible to film long performances, so we really need to replace it. We record all the performances and then we burn DVDs for every student involved so they can enjoy and evaluate their hard work whenever they want.
I'm requesting one Sony video recorder. The video camera can also be used to tape smaller, in-class projects, like when we read the book Mortimer and add acting and instruments. Or, when we create our own rhythms and songs and put together a musical creation on our drums. Being able to see their creation helps to teach kids to self evaluate to improve their performance, which is a very important life skill.
