This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have stories to tell, but they need the guidance to get those stories out of them and into their writer's notebooks. The Fletcher book helped me to become a vivid writer and I want my students to experience that as well!

90% of the students in my classroom come from homes that are living below the poverty line.

The great thing about the kids is that they still try to live life to the fullest extent possible each and every day. It amazes me to see them working hard to overcome the adversity and challenges that exist in their lives on a daily basis.

My Project

With the resources that I am requesting for my students, they will be able to begin to write for enjoyment and see the wonderful things in the world around them. By using A Writer's Notebook by Ralph Fletcher, my students will learn many different tools for becoming writers who are authentic and descriptive. The journals in concert with the paperback book will make our writer's workshop a much more immersive experience that I hope will light a fire in my students. My students will learn valuable writing skills and techniques that will not only help them on standardized tests, but that will help them to develop a passion for writing!

I believe that too often writing in school is designed solely for the purpose of passing a formal test or assessment.

Writing should be a journey, a passion, and an outlet. If my students can learn to write like I did, using the same book, I believe that they will not only have a skill that will last them far beyond my classroom, but with a love of writing that will carry them to many incredible places in their lives.
