Vertical Thinking: Taking Math Off the Page

My Project

Young mathematician are curious, social, and full of ideas. They learn best when they are actively involved in the process, not just sitting at a desk watching someone else do the math. My goal is to create a classroom where every student feels comfortable taking risks, sharing their thinking, and learning from their classmates.

Vertical whiteboards will help me make that happen by getting students out of their seats and actively working through problems together.

Instead of completing work independently on paper, students will be able to stand, solve, discuss, revise, and make their mathematical thinking visible. This setup will encourage greater engagement, collaboration, and mathematical conversation while giving me the opportunity to quickly see students’ thinking and respond to their needs in the moment.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
