How can I create a classroom community for 25 students that feels inviting and welcoming in a city where violence and drugs are things they deal with every day? I can start by carefully nurturing a classroom environment where students see themselves reflected on the bulletin boards, in the books they read, and the people they learn about.
Many of my students are African-American, Latino, or of Middle-Eastern descent.
They come to school looking for a classroom community where all voices and choices are respected. My students want to enjoy school, and feel like they are in control of their learning. I believe that when students are invested in their education, better opportunities for learning present themselves.
While I meet with small groups, the rest of the class can use the hand2mind VersaTiles program to practice phonics and fluency, vocabulary, comprehension skills and so much more. This literacy kit will have a positive impact on improving their reading levels. My students will be learning to work independently and self-check their work. The materials will be easily accessible for early finishers. It can also be used for urgent intervention.
VersaTiles helps students build literacy proficiency in a challenging, rewarding way.
Some of my students are English Language Learners and they need many opportunities to practice these skills. If they were to use them on a daily basis, I know they could improve their writing and reading abilities.
