Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a very diverse community. Families in our district come from over one hundred countries and their children come to school with English as their second, third or even fourth language. These students arrive at school with a wide range of life experiences but often, with very limited experience in a structured, focused, shared learning community.

Self-directed, and self-correcting, multi-step activities build thinking and planning skills that many students have little experience with.

Many young children are adept at playing with apps and games on electronic devices, but have limited experience with following a series of logical steps to solve a problem. Getting away from "screens" in a meaningful way can be an important part of the school experience.

Many students at my school experience housing instability, and frequent moves or shared housing mean that simple resources such as books, puzzles, and games get left behind or lost in the shuffle. Having materials that are self-contained, challenging, interesting, and that fit easily in a backpack can provide these students with the opportunity to engage in activities that will support and build their skills and confidence.

My Project

VersaTiles are a wonderful self-correcting, independent activity that allows students to practice skills in a meaningful fashion. Each kit comes with a colorful set of tiles, an answer case, and a variety of math workbooks. Students can choose their own activities, and decide whether they want to reinforce existing skills and knowledge or challenge themselves with something new.

VersaTiles build independence and confidence because students are in complete control of the activity.

Not only do VersaTiles support the practice of basic math skills, they provide students with a structured, supported opportunity to master multi-step tasks. Students must match each tile with the correct answer, find the correct answer space in the case, flip the case, and compare the design they have created with the correct answer design.

Sounds confusing? Once students have practiced with a teacher, they start working on their own, and their pride in this accomplishment is amazing.
