I am a Resource Room teacher for children on the Autism Spectrum. The students are included in general education classes for at least half of the day. They are in kindergarten through fourth grade. The other part of the day they are in the classroom with me working on math, reading, comprehension, speech, behavior or social skills. These students have shown much success being in a self contained classroom for children with ASD and now, they can be General Education students with support from myself, a Special Educator with certification in Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as Cognitive Impairments.
Every student can learn.
Each child has a different ability. This is true for everyone. These special children are at school every day, working to the best of their ability. My students remain in my support, usually from Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. Sometimes, they improve so much that they no longer need my service. It is amazing to watch the student learn. To see a student who was minimally verbal, to fully expressive or a student who could not even write their name, being able to compose a paragraph.
These VersaTiles will be helpful for the student's to work independently on math. The VersaTile will teach them about number combinations and reinforce skills they have already acquired.
When students are able to complete work independently, they learn how to navigate their worlds.
When they have learned the skills and can then remember what they have been taught, it is exciting to see them use the skill to complete.
My students who are on the autism spectrum need a lot of prompting to stay focused and do their work. These VersaTiles will let them learn independence which will be a life long skill.
