This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Non-verbal students use Picture Exchange Communication System binders for basic communication like making requests, like what to eat at lunch or asking for a break. Those PECS binders use up a LOT of Velcro as vocabulary is increased. We need more Velcro to hold pictures in their binders!

I work with seven students who have autism, and about half of them do not communicate using speech, but rather the Picture Exchange Communication System.

They have individual goals to meet in a centralized structured classroom of a public senior high school. This is their last stop before graduation.

My Project

We will use the Velcro strips to add pages of vocabulary to their communication binders. The Velcro will also be used on file folder games, such as matching the picture to the corresponding word, or arranging pictures showing the life cycle of a plant in order. Velcro is used to fix pictures representing the next activity on a student's schedule.

We need much more Velcro to support the communication goals of non-verbal students who need a way to "speak" with others.

Each page in a communication binder uses four 6-in strips. That's 2 feet of Velcro - a basic but precious resource in our classroom.
