Our school strives to prepare all students to be career and college ready. Every student has capabilities, talents, and strengths that can be accessed through the correct story. The students in my class are highly capable learners who just need to be offered the correct book to pique their interests and to feel represented.
I have 150 amazing students.
My students come from varying cultures and economic backgrounds. I have students who range from advanced readers to below grade level readers as well as students whose first language isn't English. While they all have unique characteristics, they all want to be successful and work hard so they can make a life for themselves after high school. They truly inspire me.
My Project
My students are a diverse group of learners with varying interests. My goal is to provide my students with a classroom library that provides a wide arrangement of choices of books. Within my novel wishlist are books about immigrants, LGBTQ+, mental health, fantasy, mystery, horror, historical, science fiction, and books with both male and female protagonists. I strive to provide my students with literature that they can identify with and relate to while also exposing them to people and situations who differ from them. My goal is to provide students with an avenue to understanding and empathy for people from all walks of life.
My school’s English curriculum incorporates SSR (Silent Sustained Reading) and students have twenty minutes of class time throughout the week to read a book of their choice.
By allowing students to choose their own books based on their own interests, there can be higher success in students reading and taking away lessons from their novel. My goal is to provide books that appeal to all of my students. Variety is the spice of life and so is an open, well-rounded mind.
