Your donations have made it possible for me to provide snacks to my high school English students, and that simple act has made a meaningful difference in their day. For some students, breakfast is rushed or missed, and lunch may not always be enough to sustain them through afternoon classes. Having snacks available helps ensure they can focus, stay engaged, and feel cared for while they learn.\r\n\r\nYour kindness does more than fill a temporary need — it sends a powerful message that our community believes in and supports them. Sometimes a small snack is just what a student needs to refocus, reenergize, or even wake up and fully participate. Your support has made a meaningful difference in our classroom, and we are incredibly grateful.\r\n\r\nWe have already begun using the new books! Students are selecting texts that reflect their interests and cultures, which has sparked authentic discussions and stronger engagement. The snacks have also made a huge impact — they help create a welcoming, focused environment where students feel cared for and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, students claimed their favorites. Many of them expressed how special it felt to receive brand-new resources in Spanish. The snacks were met with smiles and gratitude, and students understood that someone beyond our classroom believed in them.\r\n\r\nWe are continuing a literacy project for IB Spanish and my Native Speakers class. Students will use their new books to create reflective responses and peer-led discussions. Some are preparing short presentations connecting themes from their reading to their own experiences and/or IB learner profiles. Your contribution is helping us build not only academic skills, but also confidence and community.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving our students this opportunity.","fullyFundedDate":1767210067594,"projectUrl":"project/nourish-to-flourish-building-strong-spa/9910463/","projectTitle":"Nourish to Flourish: Building Strong Spanish Readers in IB","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Holmes","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10357834_orig.jpg?crop=271,271,x253,y54&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1763667004188","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10357834"},{"teacherId":650913,"projectId":9752610,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation that allowed us to buy modern literary fiction books for our students. With these books, our students were able to analyze characterization, symbolism, and author's craft within their book clubs. And while they could have analyzed these literary features with another title (last year, we read Great Expectations), with our pieces of modern literature, students were able to relate better to the situations in their modern novels. Our student body is very diverse-- racially as well as socioeconomically-- and their diverse experiences were reflected in their books. Finally, because we read multiple titles in book clubs rather than a single, whole-class novel, students were able to select a title that aligned with their interests, increasing student buy-in from the beginning.\r\n\r\nIn our classrooms, we read in class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Then, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, students discuss their reading with their book club. These conversations are documented in assorted ways (see photos). The purpose of these tasks is to give students some structure around which to organize their discussion. \r\nI've had several students tell me that their modern novel was one of the best books they've ever read. And one of the goals of my class is that my students become readers, making the leap from YA literature to adult literature. Your donation allowed my students to read books that adult readers actually read (not many people are picking up Great Expectations for fun anymore).\r\n\r\nThank you so much!","fullyFundedDate":1758802387493,"projectUrl":"project/beyond-the-canon-contemporary-reads-for/9752610/","projectTitle":"Beyond the Canon: Contemporary Reads for AP Lit","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Kirkendall","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/650913"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_72408","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2187,"numTeachers":106,"percentFrplEligible":66,"percentAsian":7,"percentBlack":3,"percentWhite":39,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":43,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"20.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":77.8,"schoolId":72408,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about West Ottawa High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"West Ottawa High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/michigan/west-ottawa-public-school-district/west-ottawa-high-school-north/72408"}
