Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

If you wanted to get better at playing the piano, shooting the basketball into the net, or painting with watercolors, what would you do? Practice? That's exactly what I tell my 7th grade students who would like to improve their reading skills, but don't spend any time reading.

It is difficult to motivate students to spend time in and out of school reading when video games, texting on their cell phones, and browsing the Internet compete for their attention. High interest books are the only way to lure adolescents away from these other interests. Unfortunately, many of our students have never been to a bookstore and don't frequent the public library. Therefore, it is critical that books are readily available in the class and school libraries. Unfortunately, upper grade students at our school go to science lab rather than library for a special.

Fortunately, several 7th grade students have devoured the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer on their own and piqued the curiosity of the rest of the grade. This is why I would like to supplement my class library with books of this genre that my students can borrow to read at home and school. Each student is asked to read for a minimum of thirty minutes daily; I envision that high interest books such as the ones I have requested from Barnes and Noble will make this a positive experience rather than a chore.

With your help, my students will have thirty-six brand-new library books similar to those recommended for their age group by their peers. Reading skills are sure to improve as they spend increased time reading books they enjoy. As they say, practice makes perfect!
