Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I will be teaching a Dual Language Spanish second grade class this year with 25 students. In dual language classrooms, it is important to have sufficient materials in both languages. It can be challenging to supply the Spanish side of this goal. I have a diverse range of learners in my classroom including newcomers who have just entered the country. The thing they have in common is that they all come eager to learn and grow each day! I want to make sure that both languages are equally supported by myself and their surrounding materials. I have joined an amazing new school this year that is such a warm, loving important place in the community.
My goal is to ease the anxiety of my students and to make learning as enjoyable as possible.
They come to school so eager to learn but need a lot of support academically, socially, and emotionally. These students become our children, and we strive to take care of them as much as we can in order to foster their success. My continual goal is to prepare them academically with a sense of belonging and confidence.
My Project
Our students are experiencing being physically back in our school, full time for the first time in a year in a half. My classroom library has not been used to its potential during the quarantine period. Given that, I do not have enough engaging books in Spanish in my classroom library. My students will often come to me and say (in Spanish): "I want to read, but there are not a lot of fun choices."
My students are enthusiastic bilingual readers and deserve to have access in our classroom to high-quality bilingual books.
