My students come from very diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Half of my students come from families where college is a given and the other half come from families where they may be the first to graduate high school, let alone attend college.
My students, regardless of their background, are intelligent, kind, compassionate, and all around wonderful people to work with.
I love watching them collaborate and problem solve together. I even have students who will take a struggling student under their wing and I get to watch the student become the teacher. it is truly amazing.
My Project
I would like to give my students the opportunity to better their Spanish and fluidity through free voluntary reading.
According to Beniko Mason, “The best way to improve in a foreign language is to do a great deal of comprehensible, interesting reading.
The case for self-selected reading for pleasure is overwhelming.” Students who are interested in what they are reading are more likely to read for pleasure. In order to successfully accomplish this in my classroom, I need a wide variety of books to match my students' interests.
These materials will be used almost daily in my classroom. I would like to start having my students do 10 minutes of free reading per class period in order to enrich their vocabulary and fluency.
