Mrs. Link from Valley WA is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students diverse, high interest and nonfiction books to foster a lifelong love of reading!
Set in the rural Pacific Northwest of Northeastern Washington, our school is a beautiful facility nestled among farmland, a sand plant and several small lakes. The school is central to the community and provides a homey, family atmosphere for students and their families.
With the help of engaging and diverse texts, first grade students' reading skills can begin to take off!
My students especially love to listen to a variety of read-alouds. As a teacher, I use the tool of a read-aloud to teach foundation literacy skills. For example, we discuss new vocabulary, plot, setting and characters, just to name a few. Engaging books hook students who may be reluctant readers, as well as those who have already developed a genuine love for reading.
Washington State Report Card recognizes that seventy-eight percent of students at my school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. It is important to me to foster my students' love of reading at a young age to set them up for success in years to come, both inside and outside of the classroom.
The books in this project will help me to accomplish a couple of goals in my classroom. They will help me to expose students to diverse books, provide interesting nonfiction choices, foster a lifelong love for reading and grow my classroom library.
Diverse books teach students about others and the universal human experience.
They also start a bigger conversation within our classrooms and shed light onto important issues and topics such as racism, diversity, love and respect for all.
As a first year teacher, I am also looking to build my classroom library with books that my students are excited to read. I want them to look forward to choosing books to add to their book bags and then lose themselves in a book that is so intriguing, they can't set it down. Ultimately, I hope to foster an environment that truly shows how much "Valley kids Love to read!"
