The use of flexible seating in the classroom allows students to find a comfortable place to work. Whether they choose to utilize a standing desk with a stool, lightly bounce on an exercise ball during small group rotations, or unroll a yoga mat for a cozy place to read during Daily 5 literacy centers, students focus increases as their bodies are able to physically move. Whether in the classroom or on the playground, first graders love to move about! Playground equipment will foster a collaborative team environment as students learn to share, take turns, and work together. From a game of basketball or soccer to four square or jumping rope, playground equipment gets students moving, promoting physical literacy and healthy lifestyle. The addition of playground equipment that students can access at recess is sure to bring a smile to students' faces as well as foster communication skills and sportsmanship as they learn to share and work together as a team. Flexible seating within the classroom will create a more inclusive space where students can have choices about the seat in which they learn best while allowing for physical movement during instruction.
