Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is full of students who exhibit determination, dedication and curiosity when it comes to their education. They are always displaying a willingness to dive deeper into their learning through high-level questioning and class discussions to grasp a concrete understanding!
My Project
The materials in this project are meant to create a meaningful, educational, and memorable Valentine's Day Celebration. The past 2 years have been incredibly difficult for all students, and it is evident within the classroom. Not only have lessons been affected but holiday celebrations have been as well. Last year, my students were remote for most holidays, they had to celebrate with their peers and teacher through virtual learning. This year, I am striving for an unforgettable Valentine's Day. I want to spread the Valentine's Day love to each and every one of my students through small tokens to take home, hands-on crafts, and STEM experiments. All of these will be Valentine's Day related.
This project is not just a "Valentine's Day Class Party".
It is so much more. It is a chance for my students to improve their socialization since that was stripped of them during virtual learning. It is a chance to continue creating a class family and an environment where everyone is welcomed and loved. It is also a chance to focus on STEM experiments that will increase their critical thinking skills, collaboration, and pique their interest in science. This is why you see materials such as red plastic cups, toothpicks, jumbo craft sticks, and even heart-shaped candy! A STEM activity that I plan to implement during our Valentine's Day celebration is to create a catapult using the jumbo craft sticks and rubber bands. The challenge requires students to work together and think of how a catapult works, how many sticks will be needed and estimating where the heart-shaped candy will land!
With these materials, I know my students will be engaged and excited to learn through hands-on activities while creating memories that they will carry with them throughout the next few years.
