This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income, high poverty school, I see that my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Every year, I have at least one student who is homeless. I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.
They like to move and read, and they love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free breakfast and lunch.
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can control their experiences during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
This Valentine's Day I want to do something special during our party. We will have the normal cookies and games but I want to take it a step farther.
Each student will make at least one Valentine's Day card to deliver to children at the Children's Hospital across the street from our school.
We need construction paper, hearts and love bug stickers to make the cards extra special. We are working on teaching kindness and I think this will be a great extension of that. We will include a bracelet or notepad in each card as a little gift. The bubble wands will be a party favor for my students.
