Using Technology to Boost Literature and Writing Skills!
My students need three apple iPad Minis, Belkin Rockstar Multi Headphone Splitters and a tablet protection plan for our listening centers and for several projects.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
One of my favorite educational quotes is "If you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day. If you teach a man to fish, he will eat for a lifetime." My classroom philosophy is to teach my students how to THINK, as well as teaching them skills they can apply to real-life situations.
The vast majority of my students come from low income homes in an urban setting; hunger and "going without" is a regular occurrence for them.
Our students, however, are hardworking young people with aspirations to go farther educationally than their parents and to find new and innovative ways to improve their community by solving everyday problems through industry, fresh ideas and dedication. They are open to new experiences, and are hungry to learn more about the world outside their bubble, and are excited to put their skills to use. Despite their economic circumstances, they still have a positive outlook for the future, and know that acquiring knowledge can help them to have a hand in creating it.
My Project
By working with iPads in my classroom, my students will have an opportunity to utilize current technology and applications that will expand their world and give them experiences that will put them on a more level playing field with their peers in other parts of the country. While all of my students have heard of the new technological innovations in computers and tablets, not many have had a chance to experience them personally. I will use the iPads to create an audiobook listening station (where up to five students can participate at a time, using the Belkin Rockstar splitters). Students will use iPads to complete projects that require them to create videos to demonstrate their knowledge of the subject matter they learned in class. I will also use the iPads to create a more differentiated learning experience for my students, where they can use various apps to improve their grammar, reading rate, and basic computer literacy, among other things.
Having the iPads in my classroom will make my students feel like they are getting a modern education to prepare them for a changing world.
It will help my students gain confidence in their skills to that they can have the courage to apply to their dream college and know that they are "good enough" to compete and collaborate with the students at those schools. Building my students' technological abilities and boosting their confidence will serve them well in their educational careers and beyond.
