Using Technology in the Classroom

My students need a laptop to help them practice, support and enhance what they are learning in the classroom.

My Students

My students want to use the computer, but there is very limited space in our classroom. With 24 students, my first graders get very little opportunity to use the computer. The laptop would allow for more mobility and access for each student to practice what they are leaning in class.

My first graders are eager learners.

We are a Title 1 school. Our population is culturally, ethnically and socioeconomically very diverse. Using a laptop in the classroom would give more children an opportunity to practice their basic skills such as phonics, reading comprehension and math concepts. The computer is very engaging for my students and the more practice they get, the better their success at mastering basic skills. The laptop would also allow the whole class to view power point lessons, science projects and on-line literature support materials when hooked up to our LCD projector. A laptop will allow me to reach more students and provide access to materials that they may not be exposed to at home.

My Project

Having a laptop computer in our classroom will help prepare first graders for what is expected in 2nd grade. Mastering basic math and reading skills are essential for future success not only at school, but in everyday life. The laptop will give each child more opportunities to practice these essential skills and to develop the confidence needed. By connecting the laptop to our LCD projector, my first graders will be able to explore on-line sites which make our CA State Standards come alive. For example, we learn about the physical qualities of matter by doing hands-on science. With a laptop we could also explore educational sites which further explain what solids, liquids and gases are. Technology is as an essential tool in the classroom. My first graders will be expected to maneuver the many forms of technology over the next couple of years. First grade is great time to learn about technology whole group as well as on their on through guided practice.

Providing a laptop computer to my first graders will help them succeed in school.

Through repeated practice, whether it is through hands-on activities, partner games, seat work pages, projects or computer time, students learn by doing. Please help my students succeed by helping us get a laptop computer.
