As teachers in an inclusion class in a Title I school, my co-teacher and I have students that face many challenges daily. These challenges can range from not knowing who is going to pick them up from school that day to not having someone home to help them with their homework. Some students come to school hungry and without supplies. Inclusion also means teaching students with with and without special needs (students with and without IEPs). These special needs can include Specific Learning Disabled, Autism, Other Health Impaired, and Cerebral Palsy.
If you were to walk into our "inclusion" classroom, you would not be able to tell which students have special needs and which do not.
They all have unique and special needs that we need to meet.
We consider each child as an individual with unique needs. We teach the whole child. We meet each pupil where they are emotionally, behaviorally, socially, and educationally to help them succeed to their highest potential.
My Project
One of the things I pride myself on as a teacher is the relationships I build with my students and parents each year. Our first week of quarantine in the spring I was lost. I didn't know what to do without being at school, not being able to see my kiddos. The first thing did was write each of them a letter saying how much I missed them and of course told a few jokes! During the rest of our virtual learning, I sent weekly letters or postcards with treats to my kid through the mail. I think every time my husband went to the store, I asked him to get stamps! At the end of the year, a lot of parents thanked me for the mail I sent. They said their child was so excited every time something came for them.
This project will provide rewards and treats to mail to my first graders during distance learning.
I plan on sending my kiddos snail mail weekly. I mean, who doesn't LOVE to get something fun in the mail? These treats will help them see that even though we are not in the same place, I am still there cheering and encouraging them every step of the way!
