Using Microwaves Instead of Hot Plates and Save the Environment!

Help me give my students hot water for our labs using the microwave instead of using a hot plate to warm up the water. We will also save electricity and the environment in a safer way while conducting the labs.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am teaching 6 chemistry classes and we use a hot plate to warm up the water to conduct labs; however, I noticed it takes a long time to make boiling water. It is because the hot plate wastes too much heat as it is indirect heat. It also warms up the entire hot plate surface while only the part under the beaker is where the heat makes the water warm.

One way to save electricity and reduce environmental impact in the lab is by using the microwave instead of a hot plate to heat up water; This method is not only efficient, but it's also a safer way of conducting experiments.

By implementing this technique, we can contribute towards creating a more sustainable and safer environment for everyone.

I decided to use available technology to save electricity and make conducting labs safer for students!
