Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Basic life skills and social skills are behaviors that an Autistic child works on every day of his or her life. Things that we take for granted i.e. using the restroom, talking to a friend, or even going to a new place are challenges they need to face head on.
Mr. Vigo's class is a group of 6th through 8th grade students who are diagnosed with Autism.
They are fun-loving, resourceful, and a little unpredictable at times.
They enjoy making others laugh by telling their favorite jokes, collecting recyclables each week to raise money for field trips, and being overly blunt at times (i.e. ...after a VERY stressful day... "Mr. Vigo- You know, it's a great day to fly a kite!").
My Project
Having books that personalize stories by using a child's name and physical features to make the characters look like them will allow my students to identify with the story and perceive the skills as something they can accomplish. Students can add them to their own personal library to refer back to when a similar situation arises.
The "Clicker 5" computer program will allow my non-verbal students to express their feelings and ideas through writing. This resource will also help the entire class to be more fluent writers because of the sentence frame, picture identification assistance, and audio playback features.
In this project I am requesting various interactive (able to insert student names for a more personable feel) books that deal with essential life skill behaviors such as; "Proper Bus Behavior" and "Introducing Yourself." I am also requesting the "Clicker 5" program that will help 3+ students (non-verbal) be able to communicate through a voice activated picture device system.
Because of the significant budget cuts to education in California, schools have less funding to purchase needed materials.
Special Education teachers require more hands-on resources that the districts cannot necessarily afford. These materials will be a confidence boost when my students are faced with real-life scenarios.
