This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Too often we give children answers to remember rather than problems to solve."- Roger Lewin Do you remember building with your Lego's and creating scenes, people, and creatures? I want to help my students explore, solve problems, and generate new problems instead of simply recalling information.

My school is a Title 1 school where the majority of students are on free or reduced lunch.

Most of my first grade class are ESL students (English as a Second Language) where I am developing their listening, speaking, writing, and reading skills in English. We have started incorporating more STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities and learning into our lessons. Our science specialist does STEM competitions with the whole school during National Train Your Brain Day in October. My students have taken an interest and have really grown by incorporating STEM into their day. Because of this, we have started a Robotics Club for 1st-4th graders. Several of my students, especially my girls, have shown a great interest in joining so we created a group in my classroom. I want my students to have every opportunity to grow as scientists, technicians, engineers and mathematicians that they may not have otherwise.

My Project

My Robotics group would use the Dell Latitude laptop, wireless mouse, and protection plan to explore their learning in the STEM related areas. They would have an easier time in brainstorming, creating, building, testing, rebuilding, and evaluating their robots. The three desktop computers that are currently in my classroom are not very conducive for my first graders to work on. With the laptop, students are better able to work anywhere in my room and also have access to it on our school wide competition days. The students will learn how to communicate with one another, build, graph, record their findings, and test their robots using the laptop. Having access to the laptop will greatly motivate and engage them in this STEM related program, thus encouraging them to pursue STEM related careers in the future.

This project will greatly help my first grade robotics group to think critically, collaborate, communicate, record, graph, and problem solve.

What better way to help prepare my students for STEM related careers in their future!
