Using Knitting to Inspire Student Travel on the Silk Road!

My students need yarn to knit hats and scarfs that they will donate to a homeless shelter in our local community.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Global history doesn't always have to be about facts and dates folks. My classroom has been designed to not only inspire critical thinking regarding the history of the global world but to also get my students involved in the creation of their own history. At our school we use Expeditionary Learning to develop, design, and implement engaging and rigorous curriculum that will provide the tools and the inquiry skills necessary to prepare our students for college. More importantly, we have created a learning community that supports the development and growth of our four character traits: responsibility, collaboration, commitment, and compassion. As an Outward Bound affiliated school, we work hard to create learning experiences for our students that allow for inquiry and fieldwork outside of the school building as well. We are a unique high needs school with an exceptional amount of potential.

As a high needs school, our students do not have access to the same amount of resources and supplies that are afforded by other schools outside of our community. Although my students may become interested in a particular topic, they do not always have the opportunity to pursue deeper inquiry due to a lack of materials and resources. In this particular situation, my students have shown unparalleled interest in the history of the Silk Road and the Age of Exploration. They have become particularly interested in the silk making process and the history of silk worm farming in global history. Upon a recent fieldwork experience to the Museum of Natural History, my students became overwhelmed with excitement when they were able to witness firsthand live silkworms and the loom work involved in the creation of the delicate material. Since their visit last week, we have decided as a class to use our knowledge of loom work to create our own Silk Road materials to donate to a local homeless shelter for the holiday season. However, our loom work will be with yarn, not silk.

In order to make this learning experience possible, my students need a supply of yarn that will enable each student to create a hat or scarf. We need lots of yarn! This experience will help my students use their love of global history to help influence a situation that is the present reality for many people in our community. A number of our students have also had experiences living in homeless shelters and would like to do something positive for their community for the holiday season. Unfortunately, our school does not have the financial means to buy yarn and miscellaneous knitting supplies.

By donating to our Silk Road knitting adventure you will not only be helping my students with the mastery of global history content, but you will be helping a number of people who are affected by homelessness throughout our community. This is not just a lesson designed to pass the global history Regents examination in New York State. This is a lesson about the importance of compassion and empathy as well as a lesson in life.
