Using Inquiry to Foster 21st Century Skills

My students need 2 netbooks for more access to the internet in order to complete real-time research for our inquiry-based units.

My Students

Do you remember when the hard part about doing a research project for school was finding enough information? Those days are gone! Now the tough part is securing access to the Internet and teaching kids how to evaluate the resources they find, so that they can use reliable information.

My students are generally at-risk, struggling freshmen who have difficulty with organization and study skills.

Many of them are unmotivated and have disengaged from school. I work in a large suburban high school in a generally middle-class area; however, we also have some low-income students. In addition, some of my kids are students who participate in a voluntary integration program and are bussed in.

My Project

My students are great kids with a lot of potential, and I want to focus our class work on inquiry-based learning, so that they can learn real-life research and collaboration skills. My students are motivated by work that allows them to work together and that has real meaning to them. In a school of almost 1400 students, we have only three computer labs for general use, and it's hard to get my kids enough Internet access to sustain meaningful research. Since my classes are small, adding two portable computers (netbooks) to my one classroom computer would allow all groups access to the Internet and online research databases.

Teaching my students how to conduct accurate, meaningful research as freshmen will motivate them to be engaged in school and instill key research strategies that will help them in future classes and work-related tasks.
