Using Graphic Novel Persepolis to Understand the Evolution of Culture
Help me give my students a sense of what the world looks like outside of American borders. Although American history is crucial in understanding our national culture, I believe students should be handed a wider lens.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a demographic area where educational resources are limited, parents and grandparents work long hours, and about 95% of them are labeled "Title I or at-risk" students. In my eleven years of teaching experience, I can honestly say that my students come into my classroom ready to learn, discuss, write, and read despite the difficult financial circumstances they might be facing at home. They are hardworking kids who come from hardworking families. My students understand the value of effort and dedication because they've seen the product of hard work in their daily lives through their parents.
My Project
My curriculum at the English II level revolves around reading world literature. I take this opportunity to emphasize concepts of culture, identity, and build empathy in my students.
I believe the graphic novel Persepolis is a wonderful resource to study because it will allow my students to see how culture can change within a nation and how some changes can drastically affect certain members of society.
Students will be writing about issues dealing with moral dilemmas and the causes and effects of change within a nation.
Although my students are in high school, I believe reading a graphic novel will be a refreshing experience.
