My Students

My students are curious, thoughtful, hard working, and just plain fun to be around! They thrive in active classrooms, getting hands-on learning experiences whenever we can provide them. Not only do they strive daily for their own success, but they are also invested in the success of their peers.

Our school is located in Indianapolis’ east side, in a bustling suburb known as Irvington.

Many of our students come from the surrounding neighborhoods, while others travel upwards of 30 minutes from all over the city to come to our school. This diverse background makes our student body truly unique to work with.

Though they are all different they all have a common drive to succeed. They may not always come in in the morning feeling at the top of their game, but they always try their best to succeed. The levels of grit these young men and women display is truly astounding.

My Project

At the beginning of the year a group of students came to me asking to start a Dungeons and Dragons club. When it came time for our first meeting I expected a small group of maybe 5-10 students to show up. Imagine my surprise when 25 students crammed into my room! (This is rather large, as our school only has 300 students). While this was a wonderful experience we soon found it difficult to do the basics, such as character creation, with only my personal copy of the books. Thus this project was born.

Dungeons and Dragons is a powerful tool for social learning.

Play encourages creative problem solving and cooperation. Students must work together, evaluating the group's individual strengths and weaknesses in order to successfully navigate the challenges put in front of them by another student acting as the Dungeon Master (DM for short.) The students acting as DMs will be creating their own adventures as well as modifying existing adventures in order to create a fun, yet challenging experience for their players.

The most important part of this project are the Player's Handbooks. This book contains the basic rules for running the game. Learning to navigate challenges within the constraints of a rule system will help the students learn the soft skills they need to navigate the challenges they face in their everyday life, both in and out of school.
