Wow! I cannot believe that I am almost finished with my fourth year of teaching. Time sure does fly by when you are doing something that you love. I teach kindergarten, and I have such an amazing group of superheroes this year! I have been blessed with such smart, caring, and affectionate students.
My students attend a public Title I school where we serve military and non-military students.
At times, my students may not have what they need, but they come to class excited and eager to learn. My superheroes are unique in their own abilities and what they bring to the classroom. They work together as a team, and together they have tackled the obstacles of learning how to read, write, and add and subtract. I am proud of the leaders that have emerged in my classroom.
I strive to create a classroom that is hands-on, engaging, safe, and fun. I strive to give my superheroes every experience that is at my disposal. They are what push me to be the best teacher that I can be! They have truly left an imprint on my heart.
In kindergarten, we teach a unit about wants versus needs. Students' want and needs are met by their parents, so they do not understand the concept. In order for my students to truly understand the concept of financial literacy through wants versus needs, I would love to teach them through dramatic play. I want my students to understand that all people have wants and needs, and that it is important for our needs to be met first. My students need to understand the true value of what we need for survival, such as food, shelter, love, etc. Through books, my students will get an understanding of wants versus needs and which one is more important. They will use the two storytelling puppet sets to explore puppets and storytelling.
Once my students have a strong idea of what financial literacy is, we will create scenarios as a class and then act them out using the requested puppet theater and puppets.
Kindergarteners learn better when they are able to experience concepts and idea through dramatic play. My students will write their own story about wants versus needs. They will collaborate in groups while I facilitate and add comments making sure they are teaching about wants versus needs. Next, they will create a backdrop for their stage (puppet theater). Lastly, they will act out their story using the puppets that I am requesting. By being able to act out these scenarios, my superheroes will make connections to the real world and have a better understanding of financial literacy.
I hope you see my vision for this project, and I hope to see it brought to life. I know my superheroes would be engaged and excited to take this journey. To my future donors, thank you for so much for supporting my students.
