Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
To draw a picture of our classroom, this year we have 2 teachers, 1 paraprofessional and 11 students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the 2nd and 3rd grade. There are 2 students in 2nd Grade and 9 students in 3rd Grade. Of the 11, 3 are girls and 8 are boys, whom all have Hispanic backgrounds
If they can’t learn the way we teach, we teach the way they learn.
We have some students who are on a modified curriculum and some who are on a general curriculum. With the varying levels of exceptionalities and academic abilities, finding ways to maximize student learning through individualized learning materials, is priority in our classroom this year!
My Project
The materials requested for our classroom will assist my co-teacher and I in giving our special group of students the resources they need to excel during our DI (differentiated instruction) rotations. Most of the supplies requested, such as the toner, copy paper, files, labels, laminator, post -it, highlighter, pencil grip, speaker and computer will make these rotations run more efficiently.
Differentiated instruction is now becoming the way to TEACH.
It is based on modification of four elements: content, process, product and affect/learning environment. For DI to work teachers must know their students needs, readiness, interest and learning profile to maximize student growth and individual success.
The toner, copy paper, files, and labels will be used to create individual folders for the students to use during small group instruction and data chats. The post-it tabs, highlighters, and pencil grip will aid with dissecting reading passages and writing to open ended prompts. The laminator will help make anchor charts and resources used during DI more durable. The computer will be used for students to use instructional programs during their computer rotation such as i-ready and reflex math. Lastly, the portable Bluetooth speaker will be used to play relaxing/calming music in our reading corner.
With all these materials, “Using Differentiated Instruction to Support All Learners” would be a successful project pathway to our students’ future! My goal as a teacher is to provide students the necessary tools in order to succeed in our classroom currently, as well as in the future where their skills can be applied.
