Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach 16, 21-year-old young adults who are classified as at-risk in a large urban school district. They have faced a myriad of obstacles in their lives that have put them behind in their academic career. My students are focusing on completing their high school diplomas and for many my school has become their last chance.

One hundred percent of my students are at risk.

This means they meet two of the following criteria to be accepted: one or more years behind their age group in the number of high school units obtained, two or more years behind their age group in basic skill (reading or math) levels, a habitual truant, a teen parent or an adjudicated delinquent. The population is primarily of African American and Hispanic descent.

My students have faced significant trauma in their lives and their social emotional needs have not been properly addressed. I make it my mission to build rapport and get to know them on a personal level. For many, they haven't had people in their lives who have believed in them.

My Project

As an alternative high school, my students have different learning styles and so we focus on project based learning. In order to do this we need the materials for students be creative.

All students—no matter where they live or what their background— should have access to quality project based learning to deepen their learning and achieve success

These students haven't had success in traditional high schools and so I need to adapt to their needs. As students demonstrate their mastery of the standards in different ways, these items will help students show me what they know. The poster boards, paper, tape, markers, stencils and other various supplies that were requested are needed for my students to complete classroom projects.
