Project STAY is an urban alternative school offering a nurturing and challenging education to 250 high school students, ages 16-21, who are at risk of dropping out. Many of them come from low-income families, single parent families in Wisconsin. Students apply for Project STAY and are accepted based upon the definition of at-risk under Wisconsin state law. This means they are at least two of the following: one or more years behind their age group in the number of high school units attained, two or more years behind their age group in basic skill (reading or math) levels, a habitual truant, a teen parent or an adjudicated delinquent. Students are enrolled in a morning or afternoon session to complete their courses to best meet their needs. My classroom is a high school social studies classroom.
