Using Concrete Manipulatives for Deeper Understanding in Math
My students need equation manipulatives, graphing geoboards and math games that lead to better understanding of Algebra concepts and real-world problem solving.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A hands-on approach to teaching and learning results in longer retention of math concepts. In addition, students will move more quickly from concrete understandings to abstract knowledge of Algebra. Our school has restructured the weekly schedule to allow for longer, in-depth math learning.
Almost half of my students are Hispanic and qualify for free/reduced-price lunch.
Many come from homes where they will be the first to attend colleges and universities. These students need hands-on manipulatives and challenging math games in order to gain a deeper understanding of Algebra concepts.
My Project
They will use the X-Y geoboards to visually see important points on the coordinate graphs relating to linear and non-linear equations. Without these boards, these concepts are too abstract and difficult to master.
They will also use the hands-on equation manipulatives to explore the many properties of Algebra in order to find unknown values. These topics can be overwhelming for students who may not have concrete and visual examples of the math.
To promote students increasing their speed with basic math skills, students will work in a team of four in tournament math, using the 24-game.
As a math teacher for the last 22 years, I have found that hands-on concrete learning with challenging materials leads to a better understanding of abstract ideas in Algebra class.
Unfortunately, with recent budget cuts to California schools, the resources that are so needed are not available through the regular funding channels.
