Using Art to Connect Our Classroom Diversity With History

My students need materials, like clay, feathers, shells and paint to connect their diverse cultures and backgrounds to our classroom through various art projects.

My Students

My Students: Everyone wants to feel connected. It is no different when 32 third graders walk into the classroom and need to create a community together. Using these materials, I will be able to have the students create visual art projects celebrating their diversity and heritage.

I teach in a public school in California.

We have a very large diverse population, with students coming from many different nationalities, countries, etc. Our children want to feel that they belong and are connected to the other students, even though they may look different or may speak a different language.

My Project

By learning about the art form of Mehndi from India, and creating Mehndi Art Gloves, and making Good Fortune Boxes to celebrate the Chinese tradition of passing on good luck, we will immerse ourselves in the different culture and traditions that our students come to us from. These are just two of the projects that these materials will allow us to create, allowing students ownership in the classroom, as well as feeling connected and proud of their heritage. I have requested art materials including the gloves and markers used to make the Mehndi Gloves, the origami papers, clay, molds and paint used to make the Good Fortune Boxes as well as other art materials for projects celebrating the diversity in our classroom and school. These projects support the California VAPA Content Standards # 3 - Choosing and Evaluating a range of subject matter, symbols and ideas, and #4 - Understanding the visual arts in relation to history and culture.

Disney Create, please help make this project a reality so that my 32 students can share their background and culture to our classroom through the Visual Arts.

This will not only help make our classroom a tolerant and caring community but will also enhance students self esteem and feelings of belonging.
