Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are mostly three and four years of age. We are a public preschool classroom in a rapidly growing district that provides children with special needs a place to learn from peer role models, Special Education teachers and tutors, and Speech, Physical, and Occupational therapists. About half of my students are dual language learners, many of them are being raised in single parent households, and many are eligible for free or reduced breakfast or lunch based on their socioeconomic status.
As a program with a limited budget that provides services and support to children with diverse needs, there are many things we 'make do' without but that we could really use!
Luckily, friends and others have donated many things, but the students would really benefit from some special sensory toys and materials that would allow them to learn, stay calm, and focus.
My Project
This project will provide my students materials and resources that will allow them to learn with their senses and support their diverse sensory needs. The classroom lighting covers will filter out harsh glare from florescent bulbs to create a more relaxing, welcoming environment. Some of the things, such as the hand fidgets, weighted lap pads, or seating pads, will allow them to focus on instruction during large group lessons while their bodies get sensory input, lessening internal distractions.
Other materials, such as the molding sand and sensory dough, will be therapeutic and calming for some students and will motivate them to build, share, and play near their peers.
As we begin to learn more about letters and letter formation, the ABC cards and construction products will add a tactile sense to support different learning styles. The bean bags and egg shakers will add another dimension and sensory input, both from weight and sound, to our music and movement activities.
