Urban Students' Introduction to Shakespeare

My students need 15 copies of each of 4 Shakespearean plays, and 5 DVDs on Shakespeare and his life.

Grades 9-12

My students need a few DVDs and novels about William Shakespeare so that they can actually visualize and understand the works of this great writer. They hardly know anything about William Shakespeare and his classical works. I want to introduce some of the plays by William Shakespeare to my ninth grade high school class. I am a New York City Teaching Fellow and I teach students with disabilities in a high need community. My students have never seen a play on Broadway and they do not believe that they have the abilities to understand anything about William Shakespeare. I want to prove them wrong. I work very hard to motivate my students to learn and I love to expose them to different things. Initially they usually complain about learning something new and then they enjoy it later. The students I teach are between the ages of 14 to 17 years old and they have to pass the Regents/RCTs exam in high school to get a diploma. They do not like to read, so I supplement reading with having them watch a movie based on what they read to increase their interest in the subject. After watching a movie, their literary comprehension of any subject increase, which in turn generate a discussion. I noticed over the years, my students’ interest has increased in academics because I try to bring a variety of teaching tools and strategies to capture their interest. Without the assistance we receive from Donorschoose.org, it is impossible, as teachers, to pay for these teaching tools. Our students are very grateful to know that there are people in our community who care about them that much that they will purchase things for their classroom. My students need these DVDs and novels to give them more exposure to classical works.
