Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Creating aquaponics and bio bottle systems in the classroom is a tremendous way to teach students about environmental quality. All living things have specific parameters in which they need to live, and fish requires sufficient dissolved oxygen and an adequate temperature. Plants and fish form a cycle of carbon dioxide and oxygen that enable a self-sustaining system, while improving water quality and providing food.

Using state-of-the-art sensors to evaluate water quality gives students fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on understanding what living things need to survive and thrive.

Students will be able to measure dissolved oxygen concentration, water temperature, and atmospheric pressure, using wireless technology that downloads data directly to their phones. We will also use the equipment to measure water quality in the nearby stream.

By growing aquaponics systems in the classroom, and measuring water quality of a nearby stream, students can evaluate environmental quality. In addition to gaining awareness of the need to protect the environment, students also gain important skills and interest in being stewards of the environment.
