My Project

Our Project Lead the Way students are designing and building our chicken coop for our flock of hens. We need fencing to protect the flock from predators, as well as keep them out of the garden in this large shared courtyard. We will store the chicken food and supplies in the outdoor shed.

Our after-school chicken club is run by our students known as "The Chicken Tenders".

They will begin by raising the small 3-day-old pullets in a classroom brooder and then introduce them to their new habitat in our outdoor courtyard. The Chicken Tenders will assist with designing the chicken area and assembling the fencing according to the layout. They will assemble the shed and maintain all of the chicken supplies in an organized manner for quick and easy access.

The after-school chicken program is cross-curricular as the students learn to maintain the entire self-sustaining courtyard area with the garden and chickens. The Chicken Tenders will research how to care for and raise our flock into healthy egg-producing hens. They will also create content to share with the school during morning announcements on the happening in the courtyard throughout the year. We will welcome guests to visit our small farm and work on our communication skills while giving tours to those who visit. Our ultimate goal will be to have a booth in the local farmers market to showcase all of the garden produce and chicken eggs to our community utilizing our Math and Economic skills to run the small business.

The students are excited about their urban farming experience and are ready to begin. Thank you for supporting their goals and making their dreams come true.
