Upping Our Empathy Superpowers Through Reading

My students need access to diverse stories that help them understand what it's like to be in another person's shoes.

My Students

My 7th graders are full of life, creativity, and joy. They come to class every day ready to be challenged, to explore new ideas, and to better understand themselves and their place in the world. Fortunately, books are our avenue to do just that. As their English Language Arts teacher, I have the privilege of exposing my students to literature that (hopefully) inspires them, and gets them curious about their world. One great story is all it takes to hook a kid on reading.

My Project

Empathy: the ability to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within that other person's frame of reference.

How do we help to cultivate this in our young people?

By reading other people's stories.

I would like for my students to have access to a variety of carefully chosen books that help them expand their empathy for others. How else might they develop compassion for child soldiers? or refugees fleeing unimaginable violence? or a young boy with Asperger Syndrome? This project will help me enhance my growing classroom library (made possible by past donations from donorschoose!) with stories of people from countless walks of life.
