My Students

Our middle school is located in one of the oldest areas of our city. The west side of Columbus has a rich history that predates Columbus becoming the capital. Many of our students are unaware of the important nature of the history of their community. They have much to be proud of and yet, our area does not often receive the recognition that it should. I want my students to begin to see the value of their community and recognize their important role in it.

Much like the area, teens and preteens can often be underestimated.

No one should ever underestimate my students. They are powerful. They have a voice. They are the change we need in this world.

In addition to performing in our music program, my students are also active in other areas of school and our community. Our group, "We Are the Change" works to support our school and community through area cleanups, weekend food distribution, and amplifying student voice.

My Project

We are requesting a drone with a camera that we can use to record community events that matter to us. We would love to record videos of our tournament winning soccer team that we can share with parents and families that cannot attend the games. We can use the drone to cover our outdoor concerts and events. The point is, we want our students to tell the stories that matter to them. We want them to cover events in the community.

The voices of our students are powerful.

We should want to hear what they have to say. I cannot wait to see what stories develop.
