Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have so much talent in both Theatre and Dance. In some cases, this is the first time they have done either (or both) of these of performance-based arts. I am proud of them for finding the courage to learn something new and even display their talents in front of other teachers and peers. It has been rewarding to see them grow as they explore what it means to workshop a monologue and scene work in theatre. In my dance class, I had a student ask me how tap dancers are able to make the sounds with their feet. It was the first time they had been exposed to the genre and it was awesome to see how excited they were to learn about the different styles of dance. They even performed a small piece at the end of the semester in front of other schools in the district.
My Project
Currently, the theatre has no sound system and very few lighting instruments. I use this as a dual space to teach both my theatre and dance classes. When teaching dance, I have been using a boombox on the side of the stage for my students to have music. I would love to turn around this program, as it is my first year teaching in both the profession and at this school. These materials would be so beneficial (and really necessary) when putting on productions for all of my students. The up to date materials would give the students an opportunity to learn technical elements in addition to performance skills they can take with them through higher education and life. A working sound system would allow music for dance performances and theatrical productions. Also, having new lights would allow the stage to be lit with more than the house bulbs and the few remaining instruments that are still intact.
