Students in our district are from a small, rural community in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Our community has a lower socioeconomic population. State data indicates that 77% of the students are participating in free or reduced-price lunch programs.
Our attendance averages above 95% daily with only one day this past year below 90%.
Our students are dedicated and enthusiastic learners. My goal is to give students support for academic and social situations. In social studies we focus on Core Democratic Values and how to be good citizens in a democratic society. They are learning as they grow into young adults what it means to not only be a good person but what that looks like for each individual student. We think and talk about how they want to be treated by each other, how to work with each other respectfully, and be responsible for ourselves and our actions. History is always more entertaining and engaging when it is hands-on.
My Project
This year, our school combined our middle/high school and our elementary school. Our high school students were confined to fewer spaces then they previously had access to.
Help me give my students access to a comfortable learning environment in an updated library.
Using the supplies in this donation, we would paint the existing library with the rollers, paint and drop cloths, outfit it with more outlets for charging computers, cable clips for the cords for the outlets, a green screen for a computer literacy area and more! I want students to be able to use this space for their learning and have it be a welcoming space for the high schoolers.
