"One persons trash, is another persons treasure," this is the idea behind our upcycle project. Reuse, recycle and transform what is around you.
My students are extremely diverse in cultural heritage and have a wide variety of challenges to face in their home and school life.
Most of my students do not have the simple luxury of focusing exclusively on their educational careers, many work to help support their families or are caregivers for younger or elderly family members. Aside from this, a great population of my students have immigrated from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Middle and South America. The challenges they have faced adapting to city life as well as learning the English language also greatly influence their desire for success. Each student brings rich cultural heritage to our classroom and contribution of new ideas.
My Project
My students will gain an understanding of how objects which may no longer serve their original purpose can be repurposed and may be transformed into something new and exciting. Learning that doing something small can make a big impact will change how they view their community and their world. Dinnerware from the old culinary program at our school is being given to the art program and students will use pieces of layered unprimed canvas to create texture. Additional fabric textures such as cotton warp, just and other natural flexible materials can be applied to enhance the shape and form. Then, paint is applied for color. Each students will choose an artist to serve as their place setting theme. Students will incorporate colors, images, styles and objects that would describe that artists vision.
I want to teach my students to look beyond the artroom and understand what inspires them.
I hope to see them realize that art is about the inspiration and the idea and not the materials.
