Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is full of busy, eager learners who are BRIGHT and INQUISITIVE!
Many of my students come from low-income backgrounds and qualify for free lunch; regardless of the challenges they face such as not having breakfast, dirty homes, dirty clothes, or absentee parents, they show up every day to learn and have transformed into avid readers who devour their books and persevering mathematicians who learn to never give up!
I am lucky to have such bright young minds with their millions of questions to answer daily. While they are challenged with learning deficits and attention deficits, they work hard to achieve results. They suffer from reading and math deficits that put them a year or more behind, but they have a raw passion for learning that I want to sustain this year and beyond!
My Project
My students are at an age where they quickly move through texts that go from being very simple to quite complicated, quickly! While phonics is a huge foundation focus in first grade, from my years teaching in second grade I know these students need more work with their comprehension. I chose these books for their focus on bringing the classroom (and comprehension of rigorous texts!) into the 21st-century in the hopes of better meeting my students' needs.
After utilizing these texts, I will be better equipped to help students move further in their reading and understanding of texts so they will be successful their entire school career!
