My Students

My classrooms are full of eager, excited students full of enthusiasm. Very little science is taught in grade school so my students are a blank canvas thrilled to take on new challenges. We study everything from rocks to genetics to states of matter. My students are like sponges soaking in all types of science principles.

I teach at a Title I, middle school, in Paul, Idaho - a small, rural, agriculture community located in Minidoka County.

Approximately 70% of our students receive free or reduced lunches. Almost 60% of the students are from homes where Spanish is the primary language. Many parents are employed on farms, dairies, or in potato processing plants.

Students love hands-on projects. Things like making ice cream to teach states of matter, building an atom out of candy to learn about elements, building a model of a plant cell are favorites. I hope to bring more "hands-on projects" into the classroom.

My Project

Each kit has materials for 10 roller coasters. My project would allow students, working in groups of 4, to design a roller coaster. I teach 4 classes each day allowing 120 students to work on the roller coasters. Skills in communications would be developed as students work together to learn about kinetic vs potential energy, friction, and the laws of motion.

Building a roller coaster will develop critical thinking skills using the principles of Newton's Laws.

This engineering project will encourage my students to explore a new career path with a goal to attend college. Putting into practice the information learned in science will enable students to see a practical use for something they learned in school.
