My Students

In this day of standardized test preparation there is little time for creative expression and exploration by students. I'd like to giving students a lens to capture moments in their school and community. We would like to make movies and explore photography, the marriage of computers and art.

My students live in a very tough urban area, most live below the poverty line.

Don't let that fool you, they are smart and eager to learn. They are creative and expressive children who enjoy being students, at the very least, it gives them a break from "real life". They have high aspirations for themselves. Most of my students want to go to college. They know very little about careers involving computers, which is ironic since most professionals use computers in some way.

My Project

I look out the barred window of my computer lab and I see art in the abandoned homes and vacant lots. I look into the eyes of my students and see old souls who have wisdom beyond their age. Many of my students have never seen a computer, let alone held a digital camera and had permission to capture an image of their choice. They love to go to the movies, but know very little about how they are made. I have the software and the computers, now I need the digital cameras.

This is my way of creating art with my students.

We do not have an art program, and most of the classroom teachers are so busy teaching the curriculum, they don't have time to explore art. In my little computer lab, I'd like to show children that art is not something that lives in a museum, it lives in them and with these digital cameras, we will capture beautiful art.
