I have two Science Fiction classes with a mix of students in grades 9-12th grade. This is the first year we have offered a Science Fiction elective for the students and are trying to find various texts that will get them reading.
These students are bright and eager to explore this genre of Science Fiction - some for the first time.
To aide them in this exploration, I am trying to find texts that match up to their interests expressed in class. We have recently had some discussions that have led me a text that I think will be perfect for them.
We recently had a conversation about being an organ donor and how there have been face transplants. The kids were discussing the pros and cons of this. They began to go further questioning what if you could give your arm or leg away to someone who needs them. Listening to their thoughts, I thought of the book Unwind that I had read a couple of years ago.
It was the perfect book to give them a glimpse of what the world could look like if this was possible and even more than they had already thought of.
By reading this book, we will continue to explore the genre of Science Fiction, but we will also be able to look at the ethics involved in organ donation. We will be able to look at the questions - How far is too far? Could this become the future of organ donation? What do we do to keep it from reaching this point?
