The futons, stability balls, and rolling office chairs will give the students more options of where to sit and work in the class. The lap desks will provide additional workspace and can be used as a type of grounding mechanism for those students with high anxiety much like a weighted blanket. The books will provide more opportunities to have rich, meaningful discussions about issues that directly affect the students every day. It will help them make choices of what they need to be successful in the class and in life. As we are a Restorative Practice school, we will also use them in our daily circles to help the students feel more comfortable as we are sharing. The circles are a time for us to connect as a group and have check-ins, discuss issues in the world and in our lives, and to help build relationships between students and teacher. Many of these circles can become emotionally intense, and the possibility of being physically comfortable makes it much easier to be emotionally vulnerable. Many of my students have not found success in the traditional classroom for a variety of reasons, and I would like to provide them a space that differs from the traditional class. My hope is that this space will allow them to relax and leave the world outside for the THREE HOURS they are in my class working. Many of my students are working full-time jobs, taking care of family, already living on their own, and dealing with adult life issues. All of this can make it extremely difficult to focus in class.
