it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My middle school students are not prolific readers. In fact, most are self-proclaimed haters. Challenge accepted! Over the past few years I have carefully curated books with the goal of breaking through the students' barriers. Many stubborn students have succumb and found at least one series, author, or genre that has hooked them. Recently I have noticed that there is a lot of interest in American history. I have also noted that our classroom library only has a few books that satisfy this interest. So, most the books I'm asking for in this project are a great combination of historical but far from textbook. These graphic novels, scary but true stories are a wonderful way to capture the attention of book hating teens.
